What small business can expect in 2014

January 10, 2014 By john

A new year brings newer expectations and hopefully a brighter outlook on the future. We’ve compiled a list of changes and new expectations for small businesses in the upcoming year. Give the list a read.

1.) Better technology, anyone?

You could summarize the uses of much of the technology mentioned in this article (tablets, phablets and smart-watches) as a continuation of trends most of us are already aware of, i.e. tablets are becoming more and more practical for a lot of work related tasks while Android, iOS and Windows 8 are giving us more options for apps and the things we are capable of with mobile technology. Maybe, this year will find you taking advantage of some of these tools for your business.

2.) According to this Gallup Poll small business can expect a more cynical point of view to prevail.

What’s your outlook for this upcoming year? Do the statistics match up with your feelings?

3.) A shorter tax season

Remember the government shutdown back in October? Well, here’s a quick reminder from the media. It was a thorn in the sides of many government agencies including the IRS.

It appears due to a backed-up workload the IRS has pushed back the beginning of tax season by 10 days to January 31st.

The following is a more in depth explanation of how the shutdown specifically affected the IRS and how it affects all of us this tax season. Government Shutdown means shorter Tax Season due to increased workload for the IRS.

4.) Higher sales tax in many states including Washington but not in King County. We’d be interested to hear how this affects you and your business this year.

5.) Finally, an interesting article with a few broader predictions on what small business can expect this year. Some other things from the experts.

Let us know what you think or if you have any you might add to the list yourself!
