The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is testing a new free tax filing software program that could make it easier for millions of Americans to file their taxes. The program, called IRS Free File, is a public-private partnership between the IRS and a group of tax preparation companies.
IRS Free File is available to taxpayers who meet certain income requirements. In 2023, the income limit for individuals is $73,000 and $117,000 for married couples filing jointly. Taxpayers who qualify can use IRS Free File to prepare and file their federal income tax returns online (for free — in case that wasn’t clear).
This isn’t necessarily new; the IRS has been testing the free filing system since 2019. In 2022, the program was used by more than 10 million taxpayers. At this rate however, the IRS expects the service to be used by even more taxpayers in 2024 (still aggregating 2023 data).
